Weather Warning System Information

Weather Warning System

May of 2004, Crown Point unveiled its new weather warning siren system. Four new alreting sirens were added to compliment the siren at the police/fire station to warn city residents of inclement weather. At a cost of over $71,000 the system took almost 10 years to get put into place.

How the sirens work:

If a funnel cloud is spotted in the immediate area by certified spotters, the police department's communications division will activate the warning sirens. The siren will sound for THREE minutes. If a tornado touches down, the siren will continue to sound the warning until the threat is over.

Once the severe weather has dissipated, the sirens will sound an "All-Clear" signal that is a fast rising and falling wail that lasts approximately 2.5 minutes.

Any time you hear the sirens activated, IMMEDIATELY seek shelter on the lowest level of a nearby sturdy building, preferably the basement. Tune to a local television or radio station for more information on the weather threat.

The National Weather Service is responsible for issuing weather watches and warnings. You can click HERE for active Indiana weather watches and warnings listed by county.

Testing of the sirens occurs every Saturday Morning at 10am for approximately 45 seconds.
