Motorcycle Division

The Motorcycle Division was initially started by Chief Michael Valsi in 1994. At that time, Chief Valsi assigned Sgt Keith Hefner and Officer Dave Benson to the program. Hefner and Benson had to pass an intense week long school for the police motorcycle operations at the Michigan State Police Academy in Lansing, MI. This school is required for Motor Officers of the CPPD. The common motorcycle that our department utilizes is a Harley Davidson Electra Glide.
There are many benefits to having policemen on motorcycles. Because of its size, a motorcycle can easily make its way through congested traffic to access emergencies. Most city parks are not accessible by car and can be easily patrolled with the motorcycle. Another benefit of the motor units is public relations. Citizens are more likely to talk with a motor officer than a policeman that is shelled in a squad car. People show great interest in the motorcycle and always have many questions, especially children. The motorcycle has also proven to be a great asset for traffic enforcement because of its speed and manuverablility.

Today the Motorcycle Division is made up of five certified Motor Officers: Sgt. Dave Benson, Cpl. Jason Maupin, Ofc. Ryan Patrick, Ofc Charles Noonan, Ofc Robert Franko, and Ofc. James Borgioli. The division is equipped with four motorcycles, a marked five passenger 4x4 pickup truck, and a marked four place enclosed trailer. The Motorcycle Division was almost entirely paid for by the generosity of local businesses and the community. The CPPD is always accepting (tax deductable) donations for specific equipment or programs. For more information contact Chief Keith Hefner at 219.663.2131
