EVO Training

CPPD officers took a day to hone their driving skills this week at Illiana Motor Speedway in Schererville, IN during Emergency Vehicle Operations training. Three courses, meant to reinforce accident avoidance skills, challenged the officers abilities.

The outside course was set up on a 1/2 mile paved track. This course made the officers utilize line of travel in a high speed weaving maneuver and controlled braking on the back straightaway.

A slalom style serpentine course along with a precision course were set up on the inside 1/4 mile track and pit road. The slalom part of the course made officers avoid sets of cones that were placed at intervals. They had to complete this section going both forwards and backwards at high speed.

The precision course challenged the officers' ability to make three point turns, backing into or out of a narrow passage, parallel parking and small radius turns. This is by far the most challenging part of the course.

The last part of the day was "Stop Stick" training. Stop sticks are the device of choice used to deflate the tires of, most commonly, fleeing vehicles. The Stop Stick system utilizes three triangular sticks that have very hard plastic spikes encased in foam. The sticks are put in a nylon sleeve and thrown into the path of the vehicle. When the vehicle runs over the sticks, the spikes are pushed out of the foam and into the tires. The small pointed tip breaks off, leaving a hollow "quill" allowing the air to quickly escape from the tire.

Chief Hefner, Patrol Commander Poling and Corporal Maupin were on hand to instruct fellow officers.
